How To: Host a Junk Journal Evening

How To: Host a Junk Journal Evening

As we go into spring, there's never been a better time to plan a creative event. While dinner and drinks is fun, why not try mixing it up? Creative activities can be a welcome change, and give you a chance to tend to your inner child. Crack out the glue, scissors, and coloured paper, and you've got a fun evening ahead! Junk journaling is super low-effort and low-cost, but can really bring friends together. Inspired by our recent 'Junk Journal Club', we've put together a handy guide to help host your own!

Table full of colourful scrapbooking and journaling supplies

Step 1: Gather Junk Journal Supplies

To make sure you’re ready, you’ll want to have all your supplies sorted! As well as gathering your own supplies, encourage your friends to bring their own items.

As well as the classic pens and pencils, you can include anything you like in your spreads. Start gathering old receipts, event tickets, and magazines to give you even more materials to use. If you’re theming your event, you might want to gather bits of junk that relate. Why not use seashell stickers for a summer holiday theme, or fruit stickers for a spring orchard theme!

Junk journaling is all about using whatever you have and creating art from it. Don’t worry about buying loads of expensive materials. Why not try shopping around your own house for materials?

Step 2: Get Some Add-Ons

Although junk journaling can be really low-cost and low-effort, it can also be fun to spruce it up! If you have the time, why not make it a bit fancier? If you’re into Japanese stationery, we recommend trying The Journal Shop’s Japanese stationery collection

Step 3: Decorate Your Space

Why not put a bit of effort into decorating your crafting space? Setting up good vibes can encourage creativity and make everyone feel more relaxed. Setting up a photo station can be a really fun idea. Why not try taking photos throughout the event, then adding them into your spread? Portable photo printers, like the Instax Mini Link 3, are perfect for this. If you don’t mind about getting your photos a bit later, try using something like FreePrints. You can get 45 free prints a month, only paying postage!

Step 4: Get Creative

Once you’ve got the logistics sorted out, it can be fun to formally invite your friends! Receiving a handwritten invitation can be so much fun. Why not create fun invitations using Canva to send to your guests? It's a surefire way to get them excited for the evening. This can be a fun way to test out your junk journaling skills before the event. And, it can get your friends excited for what’s to come
